The site of ancient city Cohokia sits across the Mississippi River from St Louis. Roughly the size of contemporaneous London, Cohokia was the largest Native American city north of modern-day Mexico.
Today, Illinois' main metro area is so large that its actually a geographic region with its own name, Chicagoland.
